Dear...
'Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed...'
Ecclesiastes 11:6
"By
the light of the silvery moon," this I am familiar with, for it was the
title as well as theme song of a movie by Doris Day back in 1953. And
those were the days(unintended pun) of a "can do" America, strong and
vigorous after leading the free world out of the ruinous second World
War. Maybe today a more apt description should be 'penny wise, pound
foolish,' not because America is foolishly thrifty, but rather
horrendously profligate.
"Silver cord??" A quick check on the net provided some strange
explanations including that of the New Age theory of the literal cord that links our soul to our physical being.
This
is too esoteric for me, and better to come to the grounds that our Lord
is leading me to, so will leave the cord behind, and stick to the
"silver."
'...and if you look for it as for silver and search for
it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the
Lord and find the knowledge of God...'
Proverbs 2:4-5
Silver
has an affinity with me. For back in the early 1990s, I used to make
good lunch monies trading it between $3.50-4/oz. After a prolonged
absence, I recently renewed my acquaintance with this shiny bright
metal, but must admit it is no longer the svelte damsel of the past, now
weighing in at $28/oz. Have I gone bonkers to pay 8 times from the
price of my previous fruitful dalliance?
Let me now move from the carnal plane to that of the spiritual.
'I acquired male and female servants.... Yes I had greater possessions....I also gathered for myself silver and gold....'
Ecclesiastes 2:7-8
'Then
I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I
must leave it to the man who will come after me. Who knows whether he
will be wise or a fool?..'
Ecclesiastes 2:18-19
Silver
and gold might still not be fully back in fashion. But it's equivalent
be it in paper monies, equities and other treasures many have aplenty.
Accumulating wealth is a tough obsession to discard, hanging on to it in perpetuity is nigh impossible, for life is finite.
Is
it not better to give it away? In giving, we retake control from our
earthly treasures that have enslaved us. In giving, we receive this joy
that God meant for all to partake.
Be careful for nothing; but in
every thing by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the
peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts
and minds through Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:6-7
It has
been a week since I stepped out and exhausting it has been, but as an
older non Christian friend who had taken a similar plunge to go where he
believes shared, one's spirit gets a new sense of purpose and with it,
comes the vigor. But more than one's understanding, I know Who to turn
to in this journey of faithful obedience, and on a wing and prayer, that
is how I am living my walk post Merrill.
- Acknowledging God's
grace is indeed suffice for the day much as the day is evil, sets the
tone when the darkness of the night gives way to the early light of
dawn.
- Coming to our Lord for a time of communion in prayer and
in His living Word refreshes, reassures and realigns one's focus for
the day.
- In learning to be still,
one sense His will and with the wisdom garnered from a life that seeks
Him with my all, one learns to do what honors Him, at every forked road
where our selfish carnality and the selfless example of Christ likeness
meets.
'He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver.
Nor he who loves abundance with increase......The sleep of a laboring
man is sweet whether he eats little or much. But the abundance of the
rich will not permit him to sleep.'
Ecclesiastes 5:10, 12
A
dear friend of mine has at most a couple more months. He is torn
between distributing his provisions now or clinging on till near the
end. Provisions one cannot bring with us. If it is precious metals,
definitely impossible, having recently lugged quite a few kilo worth of
the white and shiny stuff to attest to the burdensome task. Do they take
checks and credit card in the afterlife? I doubt it and am not sure if
the present
financial crisis of the living has permeated that of the dead? Foolish
meanderings this might be, but as King Solomon, rightly put it, all is
vanity.
'Oh, how great is Your goodness. Which You have laid up
for those who fear You. Which You have prepared for those who trust in
You in the presence of the sons of men!'
Psalm 31:19
God
calls us all to be a holy and living sacrifice. The path that I am
taking might not be lined with silver and gold, but it is a sure path
filled by His presence, and truly if God our Provider is with me, His
provisions matter not. In stepping out of the box of my own
understanding, into His presence, joy, peace and awe will be my constant
companions.
'....all this disaster has come upon us, yet we have
not made our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from
our iniquities and understand the truth.'
Daniel 9:13

An afterthought - Silver towers
A
dear friend this morning reminded me of the days when retired pastors
and Christian workers, who have served our Lord were given a place to
stay in the church or Christian schools that they served. And their
maturity and experiences were invaluable to the community.
Like the
'throwaway' society that we have become, the aged, even if they are
able, are considered dispensable, and sadly, it seems to apply to many
of our once spiritual leaders, who are left to fend for themselves.
Interestingly,
God is always prescient and I just read in the Wesley Tidings last
night, a sharing by my pastor who reminded all that "grey hair is a
crown of glory, it is gained by living a godly life."
(Proverbs 16:31)
We
will all grow old eventually. If we do not value our seniors,
especially our spiritual mentors, we are effectively bringing our own
future
worth down. But more importantly, the Christian faith is an
experiential relationship with our Living God. And God uses the fathers
and grandfathers to teach the next generation. Are we depriving
ourselves and our children of these living storehouses of God given
wisdom?
"Silver Tower" is an apartment in town that has gone
enbloc and has been torn down. What remains is the signage which stared
right at me this morning as I drove back from this morning's discussion
on the aged but able.
If I was to add an 's' to Silver Tower, and
transform it into "Silver Towers" indeed the silver haired with their
God given wisdom can be a towering influence upon the next generation,
to ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of the Israelites, who turn
away from God their Provider, in the midst of their provisions. Europe
today is a reflection of a once blessed Christian continent degenerated
into a in the main, godless society, now wallowing in
misery.
'Riches do not profit in the day of wrath...'
Proverbs 11:4
Do
join me in praying and pondering upon how we can be used by our Lord to
provide for and harness the God given gifts and experiences of this
silver haired generation.
Silver is God given wisdom, gold is as our character refined by Him.
'Examine me, O Lord, and prove me, try my reins and my heart. For Thy loving kindness is before mine eyes, and I have walked in Thy truth.' Psalm 26:2-3
Psalm 139:23-24
'Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.' Psalm 139:23-24
An imperfect physical heart I have just discovered. God will heal at His timing and in His way, that is not for me to ponder. But God looks for a heart that seeks to worship Him, that is for me to work on by His enabling grace.
May this new leg of my journey with Him and you, be truly a heartfelt time of joy in the presence of our Perfect God, Whose Spirit is at this very moment, not just residing in our hearts, but transforming our hearts to be truly the temple for His Spirit.
It is indeed time to come back to the heart of our faith, to live a life where God is the heart of our worship. Do take time to listen to the song "Heart of the Worship" below.

Heart to heart #29 Out of my comfort zone (20th June 2012)
Dear....
'...Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.'
James 4:17
Many of us wrestle with our extrapolated fears as to what is ahead. We ponder upon the wisdom of decisions made at every twin fork of life. We desire for the conclusions our finite self perceive, as to what is needed for our comfort, albeit it will be temporal and flawed.
This opening verse comes from James chapter 4, whose main thrust was about "Boasting about tomorrow." A cautionary reminder to all that life is unpredictable and living is only by the grace of God for we are but a breath away from eternity. But like the small but significant side lanes, it is this specific verse James 4:17 that reached out to my very being at this moment.
'He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God. And being fully convinced that what He had promised He was able to perform. And therefore it was accounted to him for righteousness'
Romans 4:20-22
God is in control, but there is a need for a response from us, to do His will. Would you honor Him always, even if circumstances and personal wants seem to point otherwise? The carnal us always look for a conclusion in the midst of our circumstances, God desires that we not just trust His Sovereignty, but that we respond in faith by honoring Him in our daily living, even while we wait upon Him.
'Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.'
1 Thessalonians 5:16
'...that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.'
Luke 18:1
The past 4 years through the sub prime crisis, where my place of employ was in the eye of the storm, to the inevitable follow through painful consequences, prayers girded my life, for it brought me onto close communion with the omnipresent God. And perplexed sometimes I was, but never crushed, and joyful and at peace I was, for there were many things to be thankful for to our great God.
'No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other......You cannot serve God and mammon.'
Matthew 6:24
'Now the Lord had said to Abram: "Get out of your country. From your family. And from your father's house to a land that I will show you and make your name great. And you shall be a blessing....'
Genesis 12:1-3
Today, marks a new beginning for me. A new birth (how apt that today June 20th is my 51st birthday) in leaving my place of comfort(Merrill Lynch) of the past 17 years, and by faith, honoring my commitment to God made in Dec 2011, to step out and to give Him my all.
Moses and Abram were called by God at a much older age, guess I am a youthful senior citizen compared to them.
'So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him....'
Genesis 12:4
But unlike Abram, I struggled very much these past few months as to the wisdom of this decision. Like Abram, God has already given me enough provisions. Yet like Abram, I struggle with the perceived "giants" in this new endeavor. Yet, unlike Abram, who lied twice about his wife Sarai being his sister(see Genesis 12:12-13) I know God will divinely intervene and carry me forth, much as I am imperfect, for my heart wants to be aligned to His will.
"Am I a God near at hand," says the Lord. And not a God afar off?"
Jeremiah 23:23-24
'Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.'
2 Samuel 10:12
Evil has manifested itself blatantly in our present world. And one no longer can be oblivious to the relentless pursuit of self interest without regard for the well being of others. Greed and fear have always been the twin headed serpent that wraps itself round our present economic system. I believe God has lifted the veil in the hearts of followers of Christ to be the beacon that will shine forth in this intensifying and suffocating darkness. The past decade has been a time of preparation. Are we now willing to live out our faith fully in our workplace and wherever God places you and believe that in honoring God, He will honor us? You are either of the world or not of the world, for the days of striking a fine balance is over.
'No one should be shaken by these afflictions, for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this..'
1 Thessalonians 3:3
He sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God; and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper."
2 Chronicles 26:5
Will replacing greed and fear with Godly contentment(thankfulness in all circumstances) and stewardship( dependency upon God always) ensure one's quick demise in the present Babylonian economic system? Or counter intuitive as it may be, it is the balm to the present woes of our fallen world, which is in the throes of replacing the Babylonian system with what someone termed 'the beastly system.'
'The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted.'
Psalm 46:6
As I close these thoughts, and prepare to enter into a period of rest and reflection for 3 months, before embarking on this next phase of my walk in the market place with our Lord, I am reminded of the deep impression that God placed in my heart in early 2008, "to buy physical gold."
Is it déjà vu that just recently I made my first purchase of physical silver? Coincidence or not, I just read that silver was the currency of choice in old Babylon. Will it reprise it's role in a world that is increasingly flooded with paper monies? It is a matter of time the world will be rudely awakened to the reality that their savings are being devalued by the irresponsible governments, that paper money has lost its store of value. When all hell break loose, only those who bought not physical gold, but rather gold as refined by our Lord, will not just be unshakeable, but used by Him to minister to those around us.
'.....Because the hand of the Lord my God was on me, I took courage and gathered leading men from Israel to go up with me.'
Ezra 7:28
This is the time to do value investing. As in our godly character, in living and leading by example, a life of Christ-likeness, for you and the people you shepherd, to be made ready to be the lamps on the hill, to be the storehouses in the midst of great impending upheaval, when governments fall and anarchy scars once civil societies, that will make the sub prime crisis look like a Sunday tea party.
'...yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
Esther 4:14
'And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature...'
Mark 16:15
Will you answer the call? Will you move forth out of your comfort zone as His Spirit moves you? Will you look at and lived out your daily work as a calling, a vocation through which we serve God and glorify Him?
'..not with eye service, as menpleasers, but as bond servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men...'
Ephesians 6:5-7
And I know I will be successful His way, for I serve our Great God. Do pray for me that I not forget that all glory is to our Lord.
'But when he was strong his heart was lifted up, to his destruction, for he transgressed against the Lord his God....'

Heart to heart #28 Seeking Alpha (5th June 2012)
Dear....
'....for I do not seek yours, but you...'
2 Corinthians 12:14
In 2 Corinthians 12, the verse that struck me most, and I presume for the many avid reader of the Word of God is that in 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10 where Apostle Paul spoke about the necessary thorn in his flesh, to keep himself very mindful who we are, and Who God is.
This morning, however, in my quiet time with our Lord, my attention was drawn to this short but succinct line '.. For I do not seek yours, but you' from 2 Corinthians 12:14.
"Gems of Truth," this is the planned title of the third art book that I am waiting upon our Lord as His Spirit leads. Indeed, the Bible is a treasure trove of God breathed wisdom, for the word is God, and God is the word. And in taking time to feed on the word of God, it always amazes me as to how any of the seemingly nondescript pebbles of God breathed scripture can at His timing, shine forth in all it's brilliant clarity, to edify, to assure and to uplift boldly a thirsting soul.
The carnal man spend all his life seeking to meet his selfish needs. The spiritual man learn to seek God first, and in doing so, as his heart is transformed and his mind renewed, he learns to seek for the good of others, and in doing so, he receives the grace of our Lord, that is far exceeds what the devil can dangle.
'And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you , always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.'
2 Corinthians 9:8
Peace and joy in this fallen world, in all circumstances is what God promises the faithful. And eternity with our blessed Father in the new Heaven when Christ returns. But is this good enough?
"Seeking Alpha," is a financial concept, which measures if one's investments is generating a return higher than that expected for the risk one takes. Greed and fear, this is what drives the investment world. Though at this moment of bearish market sentiments, many fearful investors today are willing to forgo any returns for the safety of capital. Yet, is it not a paradox that the world's biggest debtor, the U.S government is where many are fleeing to in pursuit of safety. Is buying US Treasuries( debt issued by the US government) akin to the chicken running to the fox's den?
What about our journey in life? Are we also not striving to seek that same worldly alpha?
The devil promised the richness of the fallen world to all who are willing to give obeisance to it. Is it not akin to us featherless chickens going to the same fox's den?
"When we see the Lord’s hand in our lives, it brings forth a deep “Thank You”
and a growing desire to do what He wants us to do.
If we would view through eyes of faith The course of each new day,
We’d quickly see God’s gracious hand In all that comes our way. —D. De Haan"
"If you know that God’s hand is in everything, you can leave everything in God’s hands,
and instead focus on honoring Him in all that we do."
The publisher's of Our Daily Bread sent me a birthday greeting together with the above message. While my biological day of birth is a couple of weeks away, I guess every day is indeed a birthday as one die to Christ and put on the new man. Indeed God is prescient and He has send me this truth, that He is Sovereign. God seeks a thankful rather than a fearful heart. A daily desire to seek and honor Him will 'open' our eyes to His wonderful hands in our every moment. And let's learn to savor the new day that God bless us with, come what may, for He is Sovereign.
'The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in. From this time forth, and even forevermore.'
Psalm 121:8
And underlying the testimonies of the Christian Olympians in the latest RBC leaflet "Crossing the finish line,"(prepared for the London Olympics in July) on what drives them? It is not about being the best athlete, but their relationship with the omnipresent God. Should that not be the same for all of us who call ourselves Christians? That we seek not the riches of the world, but the richness of a life lived in the blessed presence of our Lord.
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End," says the Lord, Who is and Who was and Who is to come, the Almighty."

Revelation 1:8
